Description

The Bunnahabhain 1980 40 Year Old Rare Find is a highly sought-after, limited-edition single malt whisky from the renowned Islay distillery. Bottled by the esteemed Gleann Mór Spirits Company as part of their Rare Find range, this exceptional expression showcases the mastery of Bunnahabhain's distillation and maturation techniques.

Distilled in 1980 and aged for four decades in a refill sherry butt, this whisky embodies the rich history and tradition of Bunnahabhain. Bottled in 2020 at a cask strength of 45.2%, it offers enthusiasts and collectors alike a rare opportunity to experience the depth and complexity of a well-aged Islay whisky.

Bunnahabhain, one of the nine active distilleries on Islay, has a storied legacy dating back to 1881 when it was founded by William Robertson and the brothers William and James Greenlees. The village of Bunnahabhain, established to house the distillery's workers, takes its name from the Gaelic term meaning 'foot of the river,' a reference to the Margadale Spring that provides the distillery with its water source.

Throughout its history, Bunnahabhain has undergone changes in ownership, including periods under the Highland Distilleries Company Limited, Edrington, and Burn Stewart Distillers, before ultimately coming under the ownership of Distell, a South African company, in 2014.

With its long maturation period and distinctive character, the Bunnahabhain 1980 40 Year Old Rare Find represents a true treasure for whisky aficionados, offering a glimpse into the rich heritage and craftsmanship of this iconic Islay distillery.

TASTING NOTES

NOSE
Sun warmed oranges, warm sand, grandma’s home made honey cake. With time the fluffy clouds of citrus come more into focus. This is so complex and appealing. I do not think I need to taste this at all.. But of course I will!

TASTE
Full bodied and sublimely refined from the first sip. This is quality nectar. Lots of flavors but they are all subdued, as if in reverence to the liquid itself. Dark chocolate with distinct Saville orange notes. Exotic spices and hints of toasted oak. Cinnamon and nutmeg as well with time.

FINISH
Very long finish. the same chocolate and orange mix that first made an appearance on the palate. Refined, exquisite and elusive at the same time. The flirting with bitterness and oaky dryness is enticing, and draws me in for another sip and again .. and again. Whispers of eucalyptus in the background.
